Kilima Safari Camp stands right beside Kimana Gate on the eastern side of Amboseli National Park, outside the boundary on private land. It is among the closest camps to a park gate in the Amboseli area, so the first game drive starts within minutes of leaving your tent. The road from Nairobi runs via Emali and the Loitokitok road.
The camp is outside the park. Our packages cover KWS entry as set out on each package page, so you do not manage the gate paperwork yourself.
By road, the camp is reached from Nairobi via Emali and the tarmac Loitokitok road, a drive of roughly four to five hours depending on traffic, with a short track from the road to camp. By air, we confirm the right airstrip and transfer for your dates when you book a fly-in. Because the gate is beside camp, early starts are simple.
The tents and public areas face Kilimanjaro, and the camp is built around watching the mountain and the wildlife that comes to its waterholes. Those views are strongest early. Kilimanjaro rises across the border in Tanzania, and Amboseli is one of the best places in Kenya to see it. The first hours after sunrise and the hour before sunset give the clearest views, because cloud tends to wrap the summit by late morning. The dry months of January to February and June to October give the best odds, and March to May, the long rains, is the cloudiest stretch.
The best plan is a dawn start from your tent, a breakfast break and a second look when the light turns gold in the late afternoon.
Agent fact sheets list around 72 units: about 50 classic tents, 10 superior tents and 12 lodge rooms. The classic tents and lodge rooms have a double and a single bed with a large private balcony, which suits small families. The superior tents have four-poster beds and larger bathrooms with a claw-foot bath, and some listings call the top grade the Milima tent. Every unit has a private bathroom. We could not reach the camp's own site to check these numbers, so we confirm the mix for your dates. Tell us the size of your group and we confirm what fits.
The camp has a restaurant and bar, a swimming pool, massage treatments, a gift shop, free parking, Wi-Fi in the public areas and a campfire for the evening. Several waterholes in the grounds draw elephants and other animals, so you can watch wildlife from the deck without leaving camp.
You roll out of your tent at first light and reach Kimana Gate within minutes, so you are among the first vehicles at the swamps. After breakfast and a rest by the pool, you watch the waterholes from the deck. The late afternoon drive catches the soft light, and the evening ends around the campfire.
It suits travellers who want the shortest possible walk to a park gate, a pool for the afternoon rest and the mountain in view, at a budget-friendly level: couples, friends, families and photographers who want early starts. It sits comfortably beside Kibo Safari Camp in our budget tier, and the lodge comparison shows how they differ.
Kilima is a strong budget base for travellers who want early drives and good value:
