How to get to Amboseli

Amboseli is about 204 km from Nairobi by road via Emali to Iremito Gate, or 220 km via Namanga to Meshanani Gate, and both take 4 to 5 hours. You can also fly from Wilson Airport in about 40 to 50 minutes. From Mombasa, allow most of a day by road, or take the SGR train to Emali.

How far is Amboseli from Nairobi?

The Kenya Wildlife Service gives two main road figures from Nairobi: 204 km via Emali to Iremito Gate, and 220 km via Namanga to Meshanani Gate. A third entrance, Kimana Gate, is about 240 km from Nairobi through Emali and Kimana town. All three take about four to five hours, longer if you leave in the morning rush. Amboseli sits in Kajiado County at the foot of Kilimanjaro, so every route ends on gravel, and the gate you choose decides how much.

Which road is better, Emali or Namanga?

For most Nairobi departures we use the Emali route to Iremito Gate. You drive the Nairobi to Mombasa highway to Emali, about 128 km from Nairobi, then turn onto the Emali to Loitokitok road and follow the signs to the park. The tarmac lasts for most of it, and only the last 21 km to Iremito Gate are gravel. Iremito is also the quickest gate for the central swamps, Observation Hill and the main lodge area at Ol Tukai.

The Namanga route follows the Arusha road for about 165 km to the border town of Namanga, then turns onto 49 to 51 km of murram to Meshanani Gate. It is a good choice for the western side of the park and for guests arriving from Tanzania. There is no Namanga gate: from that side you enter at Meshanani. We keep both routes open as options, so a blocked road or a crash on the highway does not cancel your day.

Kimana Gate sits on the eastern side. It suits camps outside the eastern boundary and the run to Tsavo West and the Chyulu Hills.

What is the drive from Nairobi like?

  1. Leave early. Mombasa Road carries heavy truck traffic, and the park gates close at 18:00. Our Amboseli Day Trip from Nairobi collects guests around 05:30, and our overnight safaris leave around 06:30.
  2. Athi River and the open country. The road leaves the city and crosses open plains. Expect trucks and slow patches.
  3. Emali. This is the last big town on the route, with banks, fuel stations and a supermarket. It is also the Madaraka Express station for the park.
  4. The Loitokitok road. You turn south and the land opens into Maasai group ranches. On clear mornings Kilimanjaro can rise on the horizon here.
  5. The gravel and the gate. The final 21 km to Iremito Gate are gravel. Inside the park, the speed limit is 40 km/h and the roads are gravel or dirt tracks.

If you would rather not drive at all, our driver-guides handle the road, the gate and the game drives. Ask us about our 2 day and 3 day safaris.

How long is the flight from Wilson Airport to Amboseli?

Flights from Wilson Airport in Nairobi to the Amboseli airstrip take about 40 to 50 minutes. Scheduled and charter light aircraft fly the route, and departure times change with the season, so confirm them for your dates. KWS lists the park's single tarmac airstrip, 1.2 km long, for light aircraft. Other airstrips serve Kilimanjaro Buffalo Lodge and Namanga.

Safari flights usually allow around 15 kg of luggage in a soft bag, so check your limit before you pack. Your driver-guide or camp vehicle meets you at the airstrip, and you can be on a game drive within the hour. Scheduled return fares from Wilson Airport run about USD 320 to 380 per person for a non-resident, taxes included, and a child pays less (rates checked 17 Oct 2026, confirm at booking). Our Amboseli Fly-In Safari is built around this route, and it combines well with the Masai Mara or the coast through Wilson.

How do I get to Amboseli from Mombasa?

You have three options.

  • By road via Voi and Emali. The distance is roughly 450 km and the drive takes about 7 to 9 hours with stops. A shorter route turns off the highway near Voi towards Loitokitok, but sections have been under roadworks, so we check conditions before choosing. Reports suggest the Emali route is longer in distance but in better overall condition.
  • By Madaraka Express train to Emali. On the current Kenya Railways schedule the 08:00 inter-county train from Mombasa reaches Emali at 12:36. Your driver-guide meets you there for the road transfer to Iremito Gate, about 80 km and 1.5 to 2 hours. Confirm the timetable and book your own train tickets with Kenya Railways.
  • By train from Nairobi. The 08:00 inter-county train from Nairobi reaches Emali at about 09:27, which shortens the road leg for guests who prefer the rail.

Our Amboseli Safari from Mombasa covers both road and rail starts, with pickup from your coast hotel or at Emali station.

Can I drive to Amboseli from Tsavo West or the Masai Mara?

From Tsavo West, a road links the two parks. It runs from Chyulu Gate, past the Chyulu Hills, to Kimana Gate: about 74 km and 2 to 2.5 hours, part tarmac and part murram, with a 4x4 advised. KWS also sells a combined Tsavo West and Amboseli ticket for a continuous stay. Our Amboseli and Tsavo West Safari follows this link. The Masai Mara is a long way by road, so we fly the leg through Wilson Airport instead. See the Amboseli and Masai Mara Safari.

Can I self-drive to Amboseli?

Many visitors do. A high-clearance car copes in the dry season, and a 4x4 is the sensible choice in the rains. Fill the tank in Emali, Kimana or Namanga, because you should not count on fuel inside the park. Prepay your ticket on KWSPay, and read our park fees guide first. Inside the park, stay on marked tracks, keep to 40 km/h and be out by 18:00. Leave Nairobi by early afternoon at the very latest if you are arriving the same day.

A local driver-guide saves hours. We know which tracks are open after rain, where the herds are at each hour and how to reach Observation Hill without backtracking. For a map of the gates, swamps and lodge areas, see our Amboseli map.
