Amboseli Safari Glossary: 58+ Terms Explained

A practical, detailed guide to safari vehicles, park fees, wildlife, seasons, accommodation and booking language, with links to the relevant Amboseli planning guides and safari packages.

Safari operators sometimes use the same word to mean different things. This glossary explains the terms in plain English and shows where to read more before choosing an itinerary. Park fees, access rules, property facilities and package inclusions can change, so verify date-specific details in writing before booking.

Planning and booking

4x4 safari vehicle
A four-wheel-drive vehicle built to handle rough, dusty or uneven tracks. A pop-up-roof 4x4 Land Cruiser or safari van gives guests a raised viewing position; vehicle type, roof design, seating and private-use status should be confirmed before booking.
Accommodation tier
The comfort and service level of a stay, commonly described as budget camping, mid-range lodge or luxury lodge/camp. Compare location, room type, meals, facilities and park access, not just the label. See the lodge comparison and where to stay in Amboseli.
Day trip
A safari completed in one day without an overnight stay. From Nairobi, the long road journey makes departure time and realistic time in the park especially important. Review the Amboseli day trip from Nairobi and transport options before choosing.
Private safari
A trip where the vehicle and itinerary are reserved for your own booking party, rather than shared with unrelated guests. Confirm whether the quoted price is per person or per vehicle, the maximum passenger count and whether airport transfers are included. Compare the private Amboseli safari.
Safari
A journey to observe wildlife and landscapes, typically with a guide and planned transport. A safari package may combine transfers, park entry, game drives, accommodation, meals and other services. Read every inclusion and exclusion rather than relying on the package name.
Safari itinerary
The day-by-day plan showing transfers, park visits, game drives, overnight stays, meals and other activities. Driving times are estimates and can vary with traffic, road conditions and stops. Review the intended route and pace before confirming.
Safari package
A bundle of services sold at a stated price or quoted for specific dates. Packages differ in group size, accommodation, transport, fees and meal plan. Compare like for like on the Amboseli safari packages page.
Safari van
A passenger van adapted for safari viewing, often with a pop-up roof. It may cost less than a Land Cruiser, but capacity, comfort, road suitability and luggage space differ. Ask which vehicle will be supplied.
Fly-in safari
A safari that uses a scheduled or charter flight for at least part of the journey, often reducing road travel time. Flight fares, baggage limits, airstrip transfers and park fees may be separate. Compare the fly-in Amboseli safari with road options.
Road safari
A trip that travels by road between Nairobi, Amboseli and other destinations. It offers flexibility for transfers and stops, but journey time depends on traffic, road condition and route. See how to get to Amboseli.
Multi-park safari
An itinerary visiting more than one protected area, for example Amboseli and the Maasai Mara or Tsavo. It can add variety but also requires extra transfers, nights and entry fees. Compare Amboseli and Maasai Mara or Amboseli and Tsavo.
Travel window
The range of dates on which you can travel. Giving flexible dates can help an operator compare accommodation availability, rates and routing; specify fixed arrival or departure times when flights constrain the trip.
What is included / excluded
The exact services covered by a quote. Common inclusions may be a vehicle, guide, accommodation, specified meals and transfers; park fees, drinks, tips, flights or cultural visits may be extra. Ask for written clarification before paying. Read the booking and cancellation policy.
Conservation fee versus package price
A conservation or park fee is paid for entry or conservation access; a package price pays for the services listed by the operator. A low headline price may exclude entry fees, accommodation, meals, transfers or taxes. Ask for an itemised quote and review the Amboseli safari cost guide.
Best time to visit
The most suitable dates depend on what matters most to you: weather, wildlife viewing, birding, photography, prices, crowd levels or school holidays. There is no single best month for every traveller. Use the month and season guide.
How many days to stay
A day trip is possible but road travel can take a large share of the day. One or more nights allow a slower pace and more opportunities for morning and afternoon drives. Use how many days in Amboseli? and compare 2-day, 3-day, 4-day and 5-day safaris.

Park access, fees and responsible travel

Entrance / conservation fee
A charge for entering or using a protected area. The amount may depend on visitor category, residency, age, date, payment method and the authority’s current tariff. It is separate from a tour operator’s vehicle, guide, accommodation or transport price unless the quote explicitly says otherwise. Check the Amboseli park fees guide and verify current rates before travel.
National park
A legally protected area managed under official conservation rules. Activities, opening hours, vehicle movement, fees and permitted routes are set by the responsible authority. See Amboseli National Park explained.
Park gate
An official entry point used to enter or leave a protected area. The gate used can affect driving time, so route planning should account for accommodation location, gate access and the day’s activities.
Park rules
Official requirements governing visitor behaviour, driving, wildlife distance, litter, opening times and other activities. Follow your guide and the current instructions of the park authority; rules may be updated.
Resident / non-resident rate
A visitor-fee category determined by the rules of the relevant authority, not simply by nationality. Eligibility and required documentation can vary. Confirm the correct category and current amount with the official authority before paying; see park fees and visitor categories.
Responsible wildlife viewing
Observing animals without harassing, feeding, crowding or blocking them. Keep the distance instructed by your guide, stay quiet when appropriate, never ask a driver to break park rules, and do not treat wild animals as guaranteed photo props.
Off-road driving
Driving away from designated roads or tracks. It may be restricted or prohibited in protected areas to reduce habitat damage and disturbance. A guide should follow the rules that apply at the location rather than promising off-road access.
Transfer
Transport between an airport, hotel, park, lodge or another meeting point. Confirm pickup time, luggage capacity, waiting time and whether the transfer is private or shared.
Conservancy
Land managed for conservation, often through agreements with local landowners or communities. A conservancy is not the same as a national park, and its access rules, activities and fees can differ. Always check whether an itinerary visits Amboseli National Park, a conservancy, or both.

Wildlife, landscape and seasons

Amboseli ecosystem
The wider landscape of habitats and wildlife connected to Amboseli National Park, including seasonal wetlands, open plains, woodland and community lands beyond the park boundary. Wildlife movements do not stop at the park fence. Learn about the park and its landscape.
Dry season
A period with relatively little rainfall. In Amboseli, drier conditions can make some animals easier to spot as wildlife concentrates around reliable water and wetlands, but dust and heat may increase. Season does not guarantee sightings. Read the best time to visit guide.
Wet season / rainy season
A period when rainfall is more likely or more frequent. Rain can refresh vegetation and affect birdlife, scenery, roads and travel time. Seasonal patterns vary; check forecasts close to departure and pack accordingly.
Swamp / wetland
A water-rich habitat that supports plants, birds and wildlife, even within a landscape that can look dry. Amboseli’s wetlands are important for animals and birdlife. Explore Amboseli wildlife and birdlife.
Vegetation / habitat
The plant life and physical environment in an area, such as swamp, open grassland, scrub or acacia woodland. Different habitats support different wildlife and bird species; habitat diversity is one reason to spend time across more than one area.
Wildlife corridor
A route or connected area that allows animals to move between habitats. Corridors can cross community land outside park boundaries and are important to ecosystem health. Wildlife movement and access depend on many factors, including land use and season.
Wildlife sighting
An observation of an animal during a trip. Sightings depend on chance, season, time, habitat and animal behaviour. A responsible itinerary prioritises safe, respectful viewing over guarantees.
Game drive
A guided drive through an area where visitors look for wild animals and observe behaviour from a vehicle. Drives may happen early morning, late afternoon or at other permitted times. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed.
Game viewing
Watching animals in their natural habitat, often during a game drive. Quality depends on conditions, guide knowledge, time available, season and chance; no ethical operator can promise a particular wild sighting.
Migration
Seasonal movement of animals between areas in response to rainfall, food, water or breeding needs. Amboseli wildlife moves across a broader ecosystem; do not assume the famous Serengeti–Mara wildebeest migration occurs in Amboseli.
Crowds and vehicle density
The number of safari vehicles gathered around a sighting or in a particular area. Wildlife sightings are unpredictable; responsible guides should follow park rules and avoid unsafe or intrusive positioning.
Mount Kilimanjaro
Africa’s highest mountain, located in Tanzania near the Kenyan border. Amboseli’s open landscapes can provide memorable views when weather conditions are clear. Learn more in the Kilimanjaro views guide.
Kilimanjaro view
A view of Mount Kilimanjaro, the iconic mountain across the Tanzania border south of Amboseli. Visibility changes with cloud, haze, season and time of day; early morning is often a promising time, but a clear view cannot be guaranteed. See where and when to look for Kilimanjaro.
Observation Hill
A recognised viewpoint inside Amboseli National Park, offering an elevated look over parts of the surrounding landscape. Access and timing are subject to park rules and the day’s itinerary. See the Amboseli map and key locations.
Tsavo
A large protected landscape in southeastern Kenya, commonly divided into Tsavo East and Tsavo West national parks. It can be combined with Amboseli on a longer itinerary, but the extra driving time should be considered. Explore the Amboseli and Tsavo safari.

Accommodation and comfort

Camp
A safari accommodation property that may use permanent or semi-permanent tented rooms. “Tented” does not necessarily mean basic: facilities vary from simple camping to high-end suites. Compare specific properties on the Amboseli lodges and camps directory.
Tented camp
Accommodation with tent-style guest units, which may have solid floors, beds, private bathrooms and lodge-style services. Standards vary widely; check the actual property, room facilities and meal plan.
En-suite bathroom
A bathroom connected directly to a guest room or tent. Confirm whether it includes a flush toilet, shower, hot water and any accessibility features if these matter to your group.
Full-board meal plan
Usually breakfast, lunch and dinner included at the accommodation, but drinks, snacks, picnic lunches and special meals may be excluded. Confirm the exact meal plan on the quote.
Half-board meal plan
Usually breakfast and one other main meal, commonly dinner. The exact arrangement depends on the property; check whether lunch is included on game-drive days.
Single supplement
An extra charge sometimes applied when one guest occupies a room or tent designed and priced for two people. Ask whether a quote is based on single occupancy and whether the operator can offer a different room or camp to reduce the cost.
Bush breakfast / bush lunch
A meal served at an approved outdoor location during a safari, rather than inside the lodge. Availability depends on the operator, property rules, logistics and any extra charge; it is not automatically included in every package.
High season
A period of stronger visitor demand, often influenced by holidays, weather and school breaks in source markets. Lodges and flights may cost more and sell out earlier. Exact dates and prices vary by property and year; request a dated quote.
Low season
A period of lower visitor demand. It may offer more accommodation choice or different rates, while weather and road conditions can change. “Low season” does not automatically mean poor wildlife viewing. Compare dates using the seasonal planning guide.
Shoulder season
A transition period between commonly defined high and low seasons. Demand, rates, rainfall and wildlife conditions can vary within the same month, so use specific dates when comparing options.

Guiding, culture and photography

Guide / driver-guide
A trained professional who drives or guides guests, interprets wildlife and habitats, and manages safety and park rules. Ask who will guide the trip, what language they speak and whether a specialist birding or photography guide is available.
Birding safari
A trip planned around finding and observing birds, often with more time for patient scanning, habitat changes and seasonal species. Amboseli’s swamps, dry plains and acacia woodland support different bird communities. Explore the Amboseli bird guide.
Maasai / Maasai community visit
A cultural visit involving Maasai hosts or community-led experiences. Practices, permissions, activities and fees differ by location. Ask who receives the payment, what is included, and whether photography requires consent. Read the guide to Maasai culture around Amboseli.
Photography safari
A trip tailored to wildlife and landscape photography, with attention to light, vehicle positioning, space for equipment and time at sightings. Tell the operator about camera gear and goals before booking. See the Amboseli photography safari.
Photographic hide
A purpose-built place for observing or photographing wildlife from a fixed position. Availability in or around Amboseli is location-specific; do not assume a hide is included in a standard game drive.
Open-sided safari vehicle
A vehicle with open sides that offers broad views and airflow, more common in some safari destinations and properties than others. Confirm vehicle design and weather protection rather than assuming all safari vehicles are the same.
Pop-up roof
A raised roof section that opens for standing or viewing from inside a safari vehicle. Guests should remain within the vehicle and follow guide instructions. Confirm roof type and seating when vehicle features matter.
Land Cruiser
A commonly used 4x4 safari vehicle model. The name alone does not tell you whether it is private, how many seats it has, whether it has a pop-up roof, or its condition. Ask for the exact vehicle arrangement in writing.
