Amboseli safari cost: what you pay and why

What drives the price of an Amboseli safari and where you can save sensibly.

Elephants crossing a dirt track in Amboseli

An Amboseli safari costs more or less depending on four things: how many nights you stay, the tier of lodge or camp, whether you drive or fly, and your group size. KWS park fees are a fixed part of the price. Budget, mid-range and luxury tiers each have a package. Ask for a quote on your dates.

Estimate your Amboseli safari budget

Use published starting prices to get a first-pass package subtotal. These are not live quotes: season, availability, group size, room sharing and your itinerary can change the final price. Park fees and other inclusions are handled as stated on each package page, so do not add them again here.

Starting rates are shown for comparison and are not a guaranteed offer. The published package rates assume four guests sharing one private vehicle in the green season unless the package says otherwise. Smaller groups, peak dates and room choices may cost more per person.

How much does an Amboseli safari cost?

The honest answer is that it depends on your dates and choices, and we show a from price per person on every package page. A one-day trip from Nairobi starts at USD 260 per person because it has no accommodation. The four day Luxury Safari starts at USD 2,200 and the Amboseli Fly-In Safari at USD 1,550, because both include premium camps or flights. Between them is a wide range, and most of the difference comes from where you sleep and how long you stay. Every from price assumes four guests sharing one private vehicle in the green season, April and May, in the mid-range tier unless the package is built around another tier.

Prices change by season. Park fees stay the same all year, but lodge rates, the vehicle day rate and Masai Mara fees rise in busy months. Treat every figure on this page as a starting point, and confirm your dates and the exact price on WhatsApp.

We do not publish a single "average price" because it would mislead you. A fair quote starts from your dates, your group size and your tier, so we ask for those first.

Park fees add up with the length of your stay, because KWS charges park fees per visitor, with different rates by category and for adults and children. Tell us whether you are a non-resident, a Kenya resident, an East African citizen or an African citizen, and tell us the ages of any children, so your quote uses the right rates. A longer stay with more game drives gives you more value from the same entry cost.

How does the cost change by tier?

Tier is the biggest lever you control. The same days in the same park cost far less in a simple tented camp than in a luxury camp with Kilimanjaro at the tent door. The game drives are as good in all three, because you drive the same park with the same guide. What changes is comfort, location, food and extras.

TierWhere you stayWho it suitsPackage to start withPrice
BudgetSimple tented camps such as Kibo Safari Camp and Kilima Safari Camp, or campingBackpackers, students, friends who put the budget into game drivesAmboseli Budget Camping SafariFrom USD 820 pp
Mid-rangeFull-service lodges such as Ol Tukai Lodge, Amboseli Sopa Lodge and AA Lodge AmboseliCouples, families, first-timers who want comfort3 Day Amboseli SafariFrom USD 950 pp
LuxuryPremium camps and lodges such as Tortilis Camp, Amboseli Serena Safari Lodge and Elerai CampHoneymooners, photographers, travellers who value space and serviceAmboseli Luxury SafariFrom USD 2,200 pp
One dayNo stay. Back in Nairobi the same eveningShort on time or testing the ideaAmboseli Day Trip from NairobiFrom USD 260 pp

The tiers describe style and size more than they describe price. Season moves a lodge rate more than tier does, so a mid-range lodge in April can cost less than a budget camp in August.

What do lodges and camps cost per night?

These are published 2026 rates for non-residents, per person sharing, full board, from the green months of April and May to the peak months of July to October. They are public rack or agent rates and a tour operator may be quoted differently, so we confirm the exact rate for your dates.

How do group size and season change the price?

The vehicle and driver-guide cost the same whether two or six guests ride in them, so every extra guest lowers the share each person pays. Season changes the lodge rate and the vehicle day rate, and the park fee stays the same.

How group size and season move the price

3 Day Amboseli Safari, mid-range, per personApril and MayShoulder monthsJuly to October
2 guests sharingUSD 1,240USD 1,360USD 1,490
4 guests sharingUSD 950USD 1,070USD 1,170
6 guests sharingUSD 860USD 980USD 1,070

Kenya residents pay the resident park fee of KES 2,025 a day and resident lodge rates. For four guests sharing in the green season, the same three days come to about KES 68,500 per person. Tell us your category and we price it exactly.

The Masai Mara is the one place where the fee itself moves with the calendar. Narok County charges non-residents USD 100 a day from January to June and USD 200 a day from July to December, which is part of why the Amboseli and Masai Mara Safari rises sharply in the busy months.

What affects the price of an Amboseli safari most?

  1. Nights. More nights cost more, but each extra night spreads the cost of the travel days over more time in the park. A full day in the park can matter more than a fancier room.
  2. Season. Lodges and camps usually set higher rates in busy months and lower rates in quieter ones. Ask for the exact season dates when you request a quote. Our best time guide shows which months are busy.
  3. Road or flight. Driving from Nairobi takes about 4 to 5 hours. Flying from Wilson Airport to the Amboseli airstrip takes about 40 to 50 minutes and adds about USD 320 to 380 per person for the return fare, which our Amboseli Fly-In Safari includes.
  4. Group size. A private vehicle and guide cost the same whether two or six people are inside, so larger groups usually share more of the cost per person.
  5. Residency. KWS charges different rates by visitor category, so tell us if you live in Kenya or East Africa.
  6. Extras. Balloon flights, community visits and private dinners add up, so choose the ones that matter most.

Is a private vehicle worth the extra cost?

For most guests, yes. A private 4x4 means you set the pace. You stay at a sighting as long as you like, you ask your guide to start earlier for the mountain and you are never waiting for strangers. Every guest gets a window seat, which matters for photographs and for children. Most of our packages use a private vehicle with a pop-up roof, and the budget camping safari can be shared or private. A shared option lowers the per-person cost, and it suits solo travellers who like company.

How do you build your own budget step by step?

  1. Choose how many nights you want. Two nights in the park is a strong balance for a first visit.
  2. Choose your tier: budget, mid-range or luxury.
  3. Choose road or flight between Nairobi and the park.
  4. Add the extras you care about, such as a balloon flight or a community visit.
  5. Add the items outside the price: tips, insurance and drinks.
  6. Send us the list and ask for one quote with the options side by side.

Where can you save money without losing the safari?

Save on the room, not on the days. A budget or mid-range stay with two full days in the park beats a luxury room with a single drive. Travelling in the quieter months, often the rainy months, can cut accommodation costs. Sharing a vehicle with friends or family spreads the fixed cost. Choose road over flight if you have the time. Skip extras that you will not use.

Do not save on the driver-guide, the vehicle or the number of days in the park. They decide how much you see. Our Amboseli park fees guide explains how KWS rates work so you can budget with confidence.

For size, gates and hours, see the Amboseli National Park facts, and for the nights that fit your budget read how many days in Amboseli.

A 4x4 with a pop-up roof and a window seat for every guest is the standard on our packages.

Should you combine parks to save money?

It can make sense. The drive from Nairobi is a fixed cost, and a longer trip spreads it across more days. Pairing Amboseli with Tsavo West or the Masai Mara adds a second park, with its own fee and its own camp. The Tsavo West pairing is the shorter option at five days, and the Masai Mara pairing is our recommended combination. KWS sells a combined Tsavo West and Amboseli ticket for continuous stays at USD 150 per non-resident adult, against USD 170 bought separately (checked 17 Oct 2026), and we confirm the terms for your dates.

What costs do people forget to budget for?

A few items sit outside any safari price, and it helps to plan for them early.

  • Entry authorisation. Most visitors need a Kenya eTA, and from 5 October 2026 most must also buy Kenya's government travel health insurance as part of that process.
  • Your own travel insurance. Choose cover for medical needs, cancellations and baggage.
  • Tips. Tips for your driver-guide and camp staff are not included in our packages.
  • Drinks and extras. Drinks other than water and personal items are extra.
  • Airport and flight extras. If you fly, check baggage limits so you avoid excess fees.
  • Nights before and after. Allow for a Nairobi hotel on arrival or departure if your flights need it.

How should you compare safari quotes?

Two quotes can look similar and be very different. Line them up with this checklist before you decide.

  1. Same days and park. Count nights and count full days in the park.
  2. Same vehicle. Ask if it is private, whether every guest gets a window seat and whether the roof pops up.
  3. Same accommodation tier. Ask for the lodge or camp names, and check where they sit relative to the gates and swamps.
  4. Same fees. Check whether KWS park fees are included, and for which visitor category.
  5. Same meals and water. Meal plans and drinks vary.
  6. Clear exclusions. A short price with a long list of extras is not cheaper.

Our package pages list each inclusion and exclusion plainly, and our booking terms are on our booking and cancellation policy page.

Send us your dates and group size and we will return a clear, itemised quote, with the tier options side by side.
